REGISTERED TRAINING CLINICS

Practical training in a realistic environment is the best way for students to learn workplace skills. Registered Training Clinics are the essential link between understanding and applying theory to real world situations.

Registered Training Clinics are veterinary clinics and hospitals which have demonstrated they meet the necessary standards to host ACVN Student Veterinary Nurses. To ensure we produce top quality graduates, it’s important that we ensure the clinics our students complete their clinical placement have the right equipment and caseload to meet course requirements.

Becoming a Registered Training Clinic is FREE and is a simple process. Registration lasts two years, and renewal is just a quick check in to see what’s changed.

Why become a Registered Training Clinic?

There are many reasons to become a Registered Training Clinic and not all will be the right reason for your clinic. Some of the reasons you should consider becoming a Registered Training Clinic include

  • having an extra set of hands around to help out nursing staff,
  • students bring new knowledge and ideas into the clinic,
  • mentoring students can enhance your own (and your teams) personal development.
  • can reduce recruitment costs – your placement student may just be your next amazing team member. Employ someone you already know works well in your team and knows your clinic’s processes.

Schedule your rosters to use our students to backup your regular staff during your busiest times and improve your workflow, subject to vocational placement rules.

Of course, there are conditions and restrictions on what students can and can’t do, for example we don’t want Cert III students monitoring anaesthetics as it’s not covered in their course. We will provide all the information necessary for a successful placement.

Why does ACVN use Registered Training Clinics?

Practical experience is vital for any veterinary nursing student. We run simulation workshops around the country, where students (or any nurse) can attend to learn and practice clinical skills. But simulation alone is not enough to produce the top quality graduates that ACVN is known for. Providing real world clinical experiences has been shown to increase knowledge retention, develop critical thinking skills and problem-solving abilities, and fosters the development of professionalism and communication skills. All vital aspects of being an amazing Veterinary Nurse.

REAL WORLD EXPERIENCE

We think it’s important that students gain real world experience as part of their course. We want graduates with great skills, amazing knowledge, but even more importantly, ones that add value to your team through professionalism, best practice standards and critical thinking leading to outstanding patient care.

Why does ACVN require “so much paperwork”?

Paperwork is the bane of everyone’s existence, in all jobs. Our mission is to provide the best training we can, to produce top quality graduates that any clinic would be proud to hire. To do this, we need to ensure that the clinics our students are in have all the right equipment and caseload to ensure students are able to practice and master the practical skills required, not only by the course but the expectations of what veterinary nurses should do in their role.

There is much less paperwork involved now, than in our early days. So if you’ve had ACVN students in the past, rest assured we’ve worked on simplifying and reducing the workload for clinics and mentors. Students no longer have pages and pages of sign off sheets. Instead, they complete a range of videos (many do not require additional staff assistance) and shorter ‘Key Skills’ to record a student’s performance in the workplace.

Registered Training Clinics must register with ACVN prior to students attending placement. This registration process ensures the clinic has the necessary equipment for the tasks the students must learn and that their team has the ability to provide quality training in line with ACVN and training package standards by having authorised ACVN Clinical Mentors on staff. To deliver Nationally Recognised Training, we must have quality assurance checks in place to ensure students have the necessary resources to complete the course – our Registered Training Clinic and Clinical Mentor program is a large part of this.

We’ve got less paperwork

We’ve made massive changes to how we manage the clinic and mentor registration process, and the log book requirements when a student is in clinic.

So if you’ve had ACVN students in the past, rest assured we’ve reduced the workload for clinics and mentors.

What do we get when we become a Registered Training Clinic?

How do we become a Registered Training Clinic?

To become a Registered Training Clinic, there is one simple form to complete. Each clinic needs at least one Clinical Mentor registered (who also has to complete a registration form).

There is no minimum amount of students per year you must take to access the benefits we offer, however some of the benefits are only made available to you after the student has completed their placement.

From time to time we may contact you to see if you are able to take on a student who has been unable to find their own placement – but it’s your choice. There is no obligation for you to accept these students. We recommend you interview them first, like any employee!
